Asia 1 convoy arrives in Gaza with humanitarian aid

Gaza, 3 Jan 2011 – The Asia 1 convoy carrying humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza has crossed the Palestinian enclave’s border with Egypt, the Al Quds radio station reported on Monday.

The Asia 1 convoy, gathering 170 activists from over 15 Asian states, is carrying 1,000 tons of food and medical supplies.

It left the Indian city of Delhi in November at the initiative of the Asian People’s Solidarity for Palestine (APSP) group.

The radio said Egyptian authorities have allowed only 108 members of the convoy to cross the border, excluding Iranian and other nationals.

In October, another humanitarian convoy Lifeline 5 arrived in Gaza from Europe.

The Gaza Strip has been subject to an almost continuous Israeli blockade since the radical Islamic group Hamas took control of the enclave in the summer of 2007, ousting President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah movement.

Since the start of the blockade, most of Gaza’s consumer goods have been smuggled through tunnels from Egypt.

The Israeli military stormed the Freedom Flotilla ships in neutral waters in the Mediterranean Sea in late May as they tried to take 10,000 tons of aid to the Gaza Strip. The raid claimed the lives of nine activists.
